Binnies are recruiting a Principal Hydraulic Consultant to carry out modelling and computational analysis for a range of hydraulic and hydrology applications, including river and coastal modelling, hydrodynamic modelling, flood risk studies, stormwater management, and reservoir, spillway and dam breach modelling.

The successful applicant will need to be able to communicate directly with clients and supervise more junior team members.

About the Role

The role includes:

  • Undertake a variety of model studies pertaining to rivers and coastal systems
  • Construction of hydraulic and hydrodynamic models, model validation, and use of models to investigate flood risk, and proposals for flood mitigation
  • Perform coastal modelling including wave and tidal modelling, outfalls, and dispersion studies
  • Prepare technical reports
  • Prepare tenders and deliver project tasks to budget and programme
  • Liaise with clients and other external organisations as needed
  • Supervise junior team members, supporting with their training and development

Essential Requirements

The role is suitable for candidates with a degree in Science, Engineering or related subject, and Chartered status in a relevant institution such as CIWEM.

You should possess and be able to demonstrate the following qualifications, skills and knowledge:

  • Prior knowledge and experience using river modelling software, such as Flood Modeller Pro, MIKE, TUFLOW
  • Proficient in the use of GIS, MS Word and Excel
  • Effective communication with team members and external organisations
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely, producing high quality reports
  • Able to work within budgets and to agreed timelines
  • Ability to apply knowledge to non-standard situations
  • Analytical ability, attention to detail and focus on quality

  • Be driven to develop and improve your technical skills and advance your career
  • Experience of programming, macro writing or automation of tasks
  • Experience in water quality modelling
  • Committed to supporting junior members with their career development and achievement of chartership
