The Vacancy
An exciting opportunity as an Aerodrome Operations Officer (AOO), responsible for upholding safety and compliance of the aerodrome. Undertaking regular essential inspections of the runway, taxiway and apron areas. Primary responders to incidents and undertaking vital wildlife control duties. In winter, undertake snow clearing and de-icing activities ensuring the manoeuvring and apron areas remain serviceable and are recovered swiftly. The AOO provides essential oversight for the airfield, proactively monitoring safety and providing essential support to the wider Aerodrome Operations team whilst also engaging with variety of both internal and external stakeholders; including airlines and Air Traffic Control.
AOO is an extremely rewarding role whereby individuals must overcome challenges, be adaptable and proactive to deliver a safe, stable and efficient operation.
Main purpose of Job:
Reporting to the Senior Aerodrome Operations Officer (SAOO), the Aerodrome Operations Officer (AOO) has the functional responsibility of achieving the Aerodrome Operations mission statement in delivering a safe, stable, efficient and compliant operation by responding to airfield matters, making best use of available infrastructure and by balancing the needs of, and communicating with stakeholders.
The AOO is responsible for working with other internal operational teams in delivering the mission statement.
Undertaking a variety of inspections, rectifying findings and proactively engaging with stakeholders to find solutions.
The AOO has day-to-day responsibility for undertaking wildlife patrols/actions in accordance with the Wildlife Hazard Management Plan.
Responding to, and communicating operational deficiencies and impacts
Responsibilities
Undertake roles and responsibilities within the Aerodrome Operations team in a manner which reflects both the team’s high-performance culture and is aligned to organisational values. Deliver the operational plan and identify opportunities for continuous improvement within the team. Deliver excellent airline and passenger service, supporting the drive for On-Time Performance (OTP) standards. Complete duties as assigned by the SAOO.
Ensure that the Aerodrome Operations Manager (AOM) is kept fully briefed about changes to operational status of the aerodrome and the wider issues affecting the business. Update the LCY Executive and Leadership teams in accordance with the LCY Crisis Response Plan (CRP). Deliver stated department objectives.
Complete and submit near-miss, safety and occurrence reports using the Centrik reporting system for onward analysis and investigation by the SAOO, the AOM, the Head of Aerodrome Operations (HAO) and the Safety Unit. Provide an initial response to any incident or accident occurring airside including liaison with internal departments and external stakeholders. Where trained to do so, render first aid as and when required. Ensure reports are completed in a timely fashion.
Contribute to specific business process improvement projects and to continually improve standards of safety, customer service, environmental performance, and the efficiency of the Aerodrome Operations team and the wider business. Assist in the development of business plans and business cases for consideration by the LCY Executive and Leadership teams as part of the OPEX/CAPEX budgetary process.
Complete administrative tasks including, but not limited to Airside Driving Permits (ADPs), Airside Vehicle Permits (AVPs) and Temporary Airside Passes. Update AO database, shift briefing and hand-over documentation, aircraft engine run documentation, wildlife identification logs, wildlife strike reports, issuing of NOTAM’s and maintenance and inspection logs in accordance with EASA AMC1 ADR.OR.D.035.
Communicate impact, disruption and general information relating to the operation in a timely manner to internal and external stakeholders.
Comply with all relevant health and safety regulations and codes of practice. Conform to published RAs/SSOWs/instructions relating to Aerodrome Operations roles and responsibilities, such as the wearing of role specific PPE i.e. water safety equipment. Monitor personnel working airside to ensure their compliance with procedures/instructions and UK Guidance Material contained in CAP 642 – Airside Safety Management.
Inspect the aerodrome in accordance with current instructions/procedures, the Aerodrome Manual and the EASA Aerodrome Acceptable Means of Compliance and Guidance Material for Aerodromes. Record information relating to defective equipment or infrastructure (if found), promulgate information to relevant airport departments, external stakeholders and agencies and take appropriate action to ensure continued safe operations, where possible.
Fulfil airside sweeping activities, both scheduled and ad-hoc in accordance with FOD plans and spillage response.
Monitor the local environment for any obstacles which may infringe safeguarded surfaces, such as Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS), including the movement of vessels through surrounding docklands ensuring a small an impact as is possible to flight operations. Such monitoring is to include ensuring obstacles are correctly lit and/or marked in accordance with EASA Certification Specification for Aerodrome Design Manual, Chapter Q.
Undertake aircraft stand allocation duties in support of the Aerodrome Operations Stand Planner (AOSP) during rest breaks or unplanned absence. Ensure aircraft are allocated aircraft stands in accordance with current procedures/instructions and any published guidance material, making best use of available capacity and maximise OTP. Liaison with all internal and external stakeholders including, but not limited to ATC, Aircraft Operations, ground handlers and customer airlines.
Undertake wildlife control duties in accordance with current procedures/instructions, LCY Aerodrome Manual, the EASA Aerodrome Acceptable Means of Compliance and Guidance Material for Aerodromes and as per CAP 722 – Wildlife Hazard Management at Aerodromes. Maintain a wildlife free airfield during aerodrome operational hours, using all available means. Ensure all logs and records relating to actions taken, equipment drawn and returned are completed accurately.
Act as the Snow Team Leader in accordance with the published LCY Winter Operations Plan. Assess movement area surface states and make the operational decision to open or close all or sections of the movement area. Control snow clearing equipment operated by personnel and feedback to the Snow Clearance Coordinator in the Snow Cell as to the progress of snow clearance activities. Liaise with internal airport departments and external stakeholders to move their equipment.
Support operational and tactical commander(s) during an airport incident or emergency. Undertake actions in accordance with the Crisis Response Plan CRP and/or as the SAOO or AOM directs.
Attend incidents, accidents and occurrences airside and obtain witness statements, photographic and CCTV evidence. Produce objective, summary narratives of incidents for review by the Safety Unit using the Centrik reporting system. Provide escorts to attending external emergency services to incident sites as required. Adopt procedural, equipment and infrastructure changes to either prevent or reduce the chance of a reoccurrence.
Support the delivery of training, including Airside Driver Awareness in conjunction with the Training team. Act as an On the Job Trainer for Aerodrome Operations personnel within your area of expertise. Deliver training as part of the Aerodrome Operations Training Needs Analysis, Aerodrome Operations Training Plan and the Aerodrome Operations Maintenance of Competency Scheme.
Conduct regular patrols of apron areas to monitor aircraft turnarounds and associated activities undertaken by personnel working there in accordance with current procedures/instructions, the LCY Aerodrome Manual and CAP 642 – Airside Safety Management. Undertaking follow-me/escorting of aircraft and vehicles on the movement. Undertake aircraft marshalling duties as required as per CAP 637 – Visual Aids Handbook.
Conduct assessments of available runway surface friction in accordance with current procedures/instructions, the LCY Aerodrome Manual, CAP 683 – The Assessment of Runway Surface Friction Characteristics and EASA AMC1 ADR.OPS.C.010 using CFME.
Inspect, and where trained test and repair Aerodrome Operations equipment and vehicles in accordance with current procedures/instructions and manufacturers recommendations. Maintain logs and records of all inspections, tests and repairs carried out, including any defect rectification.
Complete any other reasonable duties as requested/instructed by the SAOO, the AOM or the HAO, including working outside of normal aerodrome operational hours, such as night work.
In their absence, deputise for the SAOO when required.

Knowledge/experience of UK CAA Guidance Material including CAP 168, CAP 642, CAP 738, CAP 772 and CAP 790.
Computer literate familiar with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Word and Adobe Acrobat.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to obtain a firearms license.
Valid driving license.
Hours of Work and Conditions:
PPE such as high visibility clothing, safety footwear and hearing protection shall be issued and worn. Specialist PPE, such as water safety equipment shall be issued and worn.
The role operates on a shift pattern. Includes weekends and public holidays. Flexibility required.

Who do we share your personal data with, and why?
